Dijon Stanley, a two-sport star at Granada Hills High and Utah-bound running back who L.A. City Section crowns in both football as well as track and field, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss his potential to capture individual, relay and team titles May 26-27 at the CIF State Championships at Buchanan High's Veterans Memorial Stadium in Clovis, Calif. Stanley, who finished third in the state 400-meter final last year, is looking to help Granada Hills become the first L.A. City Section boys program since Dorsey in 2005 to win the state team championship. David Gettis won the 400 for Dorsey that year, along with contributing to victories in the 4x100 and 4x400 relays to secure the team title. Granada Hills has never won an individual or relay event at the state final in program history, but the Highlanders' 4x100 relay boasts the L.A. City Section record and the third-fastest all-time performance in California with their 40.28 effort April 8 at the 55th Arcadia Invitational. Long Beach Poly has held the state 4x100 record of 40.14 since 1999. Stanley also ranks No. 12 in California prep history in the 400 at 45.92, along with elevating into the top 30 in the 200 with a wind-legal 20.86 effort. He prevailed in four events May 18 at the L.A. City Section finals at El Camino College in Torrance, running 21.14 in the 200 and 46.17 in the 400, in addition to contributing to a 40.68 performance in the 4x100 and achieving a 45.3 split on the 4x400 for the Highlanders to triumph in 3:17.61. Stanley credits the progress and improvement of teammates Jordan Coleman, Jayden Smith and Kanye Martin in helping Granada Hills develop into a state championship contender. He also speaks about being at peace with his decision to compete in football at Utah, which doesn't offer a men's track and field program, and how Stanley will shift focus to training with the Utes following the state championship meet instead of pursuing racing opportunities at national track meets. Stanley, who ran for 2,756 yards and 33 touchdowns to help Granada Hills win its first L.A. City Section Division 1 football title since 1987, speaks about the leadership of Utah coach Kyle Whittingham and culture of the Utes' program as significant reasons why he chose that career path. He also revisits the performances at last year's state meet of 400 champion Jeremiah Walker from Fresno Central, who overcame injury to lead the Grizzlies to the team title, and how Stanley reflected on his own journey of recovering from a broken collarbone to return to the football field and the track to achieve success in his final year at Granada Hills.
