Their names fill national and state season performance lists.

Area track and field athletes will bring impressive credentials to the CIF Divisional Finals today at noon at Cerritos College in Norwalk.

From Agoura High’s Jonathan Cabral, ranked in the top five of two hurdles events, to Ventura girls’ discus thrower Alex Morgan to Rio Mesa boys’ sprinter Jamison Jordan to Thousand Oaks girls’ high jumper Lydia French to Newbury Park boys’ 800 runner Sean Grumney — to name a few — local athletes have been ranked among the best in the nation for the better part of three months.

In all, 68 area individuals and 14 relay teams are chasing section titles in four divisions. The top nine overall in each event qualify for the Masters Meet on Friday.

Rio Mesa (Division II boys), Oak Park (Division III girls) and Oaks Christian (Division IV girls) are contenders for team championships.

One year after winning the Division II girls’ team title, Rio Mesa brings the likes of one of the state’s top sprinters in Jordan, a favorite for the 100- and 200-meter titles, plus Steven Richards, Blake Selig and two relay teams in a quest to capture the boys’ crown.

“Loyola will score a lot of points in the division,” said Rio Mesa coach Brian FitzGerald. “Esperanza and Damien will be very good.

“We don’t have as many entrants, but if we do the right things in the relays and the individual events, we should do well.”

Oak Park has star power in defending Division III 3,200 champion Melissa Skiba, multi-event scorer Tayler Johnson and pole vault contender Madison Stark.

With eight individuals and two relay teams, Oaks Christian has plenty of scoring potential.

Besides Skiba, other defending individual champions are: Valexsia Droughn, Rio Mesa, Division II, girls’ 100 and 200; Kristen Wilson, Ventura, Division II girls’ shot put; Nick DiMartino, Oaks Christian, Division IV boys’ long jump; and Cabral.

Injuries deprived Camarillo’s Heyden Wooff, La Reina’s Sarah Pearson and Rio Mesa’s Riley Nizdil the chance to defend their section titles.

It was at the 2009 section finals that Cabral made a breakthrough into the state’s elite. Not only did he capture a section 110 hurdles title, he qualified for the state meet.

This season, Cabral has moved to No. 3 in the nation in the 110 hurdles and No. 5 in the 300 hurdles, shattering area records for both events.

Morgan has broken the county record twice for the girls’ discus. Her best of 166 feet, 8 inches is No. 3 on the national list.

Jordan ranks first in the state in the boys’ 100 and fourth in the 200.

With a school record in the girls’ high jump at 5-9, French is within 2 inches of the Ventura County record.

Grumney and Marmonte League rival Sam DeMello of Westlake are among the state’s top 10 leaders in the 800.
